Water shortages have plagued California for years and they show no sign of abating.
With the global temperature rising rapidly, climate scientists have projected that California’s next drought could be permanent.
The impetus is now on engineers to come up with solutions.
One of the most elegant designs is a giant, solar-powered pipe which could turn 1.5 billion gallons of salt water into drinking water each year.
The structure’s circulating pipes remove impurities from the seawater without using expensive and polluting chemicals.
